Best Bakeries & Patisseries in Queenstown
Pies, sourdough and custom cakes across the Wakatipu basin.
Pies, sourdough and custom cakes across the Wakatipu basin.
Fergbaker on Shotover Street is the one every visitor ends up at, mostly because it runs 6am to 11pm and is the default after-dark food stop in Queenstown. For a straight old-school Kiwi pie, The Bakery Queenstown a few doors along at number 37 is the better counter. The genuine French baking is out at Frankton — Ma Boulangerie in Remarkables Park for pastry, and Bread by European Bakery on McBride Street for sourdough, though that one is closed on Sundays.

Fergbaker
The bakery arm of the Fergburger operation, next door at 40 Shotover Street, and the reason Queenstown has a queue for pastry at 10pm. Pies, pastries and sweet things from 6am until 11pm, every single day.
- Booking
- No bookings, counter service. Expect a queue after dark — it is the default late food stop in town.
- Season
- Open every day, 6am to 11pm, year-round.
The Bakery Queenstown
The old-school Kiwi counter a few doors from Fergbaker at 37 Shotover Street — potato-top pies, cheese scones, sausage rolls, breads and slices, all baked fresh daily and gone by the afternoon.
- Booking
- Counter service, quick turnaround. The pies are the standout and they sell through, so go early.
- Season
- Open seven days, year-round.
Ma Boulangerie
Genuine boulangerie territory, French-owned since December 2016 — a baguette range that rotates daily, plus pastry and pies. It is out in Remarkables Park at Frankton, not the CBD.
- Booking
- Go in the morning — the pies and pastries reliably sell out early.
- Season
- Year-round. You need a car or the bus; this is not walkable from town.
Bread by European Bakery
A wholesale artisan bakery on McBride Street with a retail front, working a sourdough culture nearly two decades old and supplying much of the region's hospitality. Bread first, everything else second.
- Booking
- Retail counter, no bookings. Opposite Harbour Fish, next to the coffee caravan.
- Season
- Monday to Friday 8am–4pm, Saturday 9am–2pm. Closed Sunday — the single most common wasted trip on this list.
Arrowtown Bakery & Cafe
The pie counter on Arrowtown's historic main street, with a following that justifies the 20-minute drive — and a full breakfast menu for the early crowd.
- Booking
- No official website — phone 03 442 1587 to confirm hours before making a special trip.
- Season
- Open daily 7am–3pm. A breakfast and lunch stop only; it is shut by mid-afternoon.
The Boat Shed Bakery
A small marina bakery in the sheds at Queenstown Marina doing premium grab-and-go — croissants, choux, tarts, in-house breads and Wolf Coffee roasted up the road in Arrowtown. Opened 2024.
- Booking
- Grab-and-go format with limited seating. Not to be confused with The Boat Shed Cafe & Bistro, which is a separate restaurant.
- Season
- Open daily 8am–2pm — an early close, so it is a morning stop.
Bakers Lane
Family-run since April 2023 by a Great Kiwi Bake Off alum — cinnamon scrolls, Portuguese tarts, focaccia sandwiches and cream-filled doughnuts, with gluten-free and vegan options done properly.
- Booking
- Custom cakes are made to order. Delivery available through DoorDash if you are not heading out to Frankton.
- Season
- Year-round.
