    For fine dining, Rata is consistently the top pick in Queenstown. For a special-occasion dinner with a lake outlook, Botswana Butchery at 17 Marine Parade is the usual choice, and The Bunker is the intimate, low-lit option that regulars guard closely.

    Yes, for anything at the top end. Rata and The Bunker should be booked well ahead, especially in ski season and over the Christmas period. Casual spots like Fergburger do not take bookings at all — you simply join the queue, which is longest between 6pm and midnight.

    Away from the waterfront. Locals lean on the Church Street and Searle Lane strip and the Frankton restaurants rather than the most visible lakefront rooms, largely because the pricing is more sensible and the tables are easier to get in peak season.
