Onsen Hot Pools at Arthurs Point is the one everybody means — private cedar-lined tubs with a wall that retracts over the Shotover gorge, and advance booking is genuinely essential. If you would rather not leave town, Bathe by Aluume and The Bathhouse Spa are both a short walk from the centre on Brecon Street and are self-serve bathing rather than treatments. For an actual massage or facial, Body Sanctum on Athol Street is the long-running central day spa.

Yes for the private pools. Onsen states advance booking is essential and asks you to arrive 15 minutes early, with 24 hours notice to cancel; The Bathhouse Spa also states bookings are required. Sessions are timed and capacity is genuinely limited, so sunset slots go first — especially in ski season.

A bathing venue like Onsen, Bathe by Aluume or The Bathhouse Spa sells you a timed soak, often self-guided, sometimes with saunas and a cold plunge. A day spa like Body Sanctum sells treatments — massage, facials, body work — with a therapist. They are different products at similar prices, so decide which you actually want before booking.

The hotel and resort spas on this list — the Sofitel spa and the spa at Millbrook — take outside bookings as well as guests, but treatments must be booked ahead. Millbrook is at Arrowtown, roughly 20 minutes from Queenstown, so allow for the drive.

Winter is the best time for them. Onsen sits above the Shotover gorge with snow on the walls, and a soak is the standard way to recover from a day at Coronet Peak or The Remarkables. Book earlier than you would in summer — ski season is when these sell out.
